Oil Painting Collection of Ying Shih

Exhibition date | 2019.11.15-2020.05.31

This exhibition originated from the founder of the group, Mr. Kao Yingshih's passion for art. Based on a collection of oil paintings over the years, more than fifty selected domestic and international oil paintings are showcased. The artworks cover a diverse range of themes, broadly categorized into "Landscape Paintings," "Portrait Paintings," and "Still Life Paintings," fully showcasing the diversity of oil painting art.

Mr. Kao Yingshih never imagined himself becoming a "collector." However, as he grew through life experiences, visits to galleries, and appreciation of art deeply moved him. It wasn't until the 1980s, after several opportunities to travel abroad, that Mr. Gao began collecting oil paintings, igniting a passion for art collecting. Gradually, he established collecting goals based on his personal preferences.

For Mr. Kao, the greatest joy of collecting is not in hanging the artworks at home but in sharing the beauty of art with the public. All the works displayed in this exhibition can be seen as a selfless possession for Mr. Kao. Therefore, he hopes that visitors can seize the opportunity to witness and fully appreciate the works showcased in this exhibition.

Theme 1 :Landscape Paintings

Landscape paintings typically focus on depicting natural scenery, ranging from pastoral landscapes to majestic mountains and rivers. Nature has been a constant source of aesthetic inspiration for humanity throughout countless centuries. Whether in terms of subject matter, composition, or color palette choices, most artists incorporate elements of nature into their creations. The natural environment serves both as a source of inspiration for artists and as a medium through which they express their existence. The locations chosen for the landscape paintings in this exhibition are diverse, and broadly categorized into urban, forest, and seascape themes. As the subjects in the paintings change, viewers, too, seem to traverse and experience the changing seasons within the exhibition hall.

Theme 2:Portrait Paintings

Portrait painting can be considered one of the most frequently commissioned genres for artists. People would hire artists to draw their portraits and the governor or religious organization also would hire artists to draw and record the ceremony event. The artist not only draws the figure of the model but also depicts certain object, background, and composition to reflect the circumstance. In this exhibition, the collector showcases several portrait paintings from Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Particularly captivating is the series of female figure depictions by Taiwanese artist Mr. Chen Huidong. The curves of the figures in his paintings, highlighted by the interplay of light and shadow, present a myriad of expressions, making it a subject matter that best reflects the artist's style and simultaneously tests the skill of the painter.

Theme 3 : still-life sketching

Still-life sketching is one of the most common and easily approachable subjects in art. Not only is it cost-effective and convenient to arrange, but artists can also create without leaving their homes. Still-life sketching can be considered the first step in the realm of visual arts. Regardless of whether an artist later ventures into oil painting, watercolor, or sculpting, creating with still life as the subject is often an essential part of their artistic journey. Like any foundational skill, oil paintings featuring still life require constant refinement. For an artist, even when depicting the same still-life subjects, there are often significant differences between each time. When appreciating still life paintings, it's not only about examining the objects within the art but also observing how the artist arranges the items and deals with the light on various textures.
